Treats, Treats, and More Treats? Finding Balance in Dog Training

Treats are a fantastic tool in dog training. They provide immediate positive reinforcement, helping your dog understand which behaviors earn them delicious rewards. However, relying solely on treats can create an imbalance in your training approach.  Imagine your dog only listens when you have a treat in hand! That’s where the concept of “balance training” comes in.

Balance training incorporates a wider range of communication with your dog. While treats are great for rewarding desired behaviors, it’s equally important to teach your dog that good behavior is expected even without a treat present.

What does this “clear communication” look like?

It might involve calmly interrupting unwanted behaviors with a verbal cue like “uh-oh” or redirecting your dog to an appropriate activity. It could also mean briefly withholding attention or access to something desirable. The key is to be consistent and clear, ensuring your dog understands the connection between their actions and your response. This balanced approach helps build a stronger foundation for your dog’s learning and creates a more reliable response to your cues.
