Lost & Found

To report an animal you have lost or found, please select one of the links below.  The information you submit in your report will be compared with lost or found animal reports, and we will contact you if a possible match is found; however the best way to determine if your pet is at LHS is to come visit us and walk through our kennels with us.

Lost a Pet

If you have lost your pet, please come to the shelter to file a lost report in person and to walk through our facility to identify your animal. When you visit, please bring the following items with you:

  • A leash & collar or transport carrier, so your pet may be escorted home safely.
  • A government issued photo ID, such as a drivers license.
  • Proof of ownership - This may include veterinary records, boarding records, grooming records, a city license, or even a photograph of you and your pet.
  • Proof that your pet has a current rabies vaccination - Preferably a rabies vaccination certificate specifying the vaccine's date of expiry.
  • An appropriate method of payment for impound fees - We cannot accept checks or American Express, but will gladly accept cash, Visa, Mastercard, or Discover.

You may fill out a lost report online using the appropriate link above. We highly recommend that you come in as often as possible to check if your pet is here. A phone call will not suffice in the event your pet is missing. Animals come through our doors 24/7, and due to the volume we may be unable to verify by phone if your pet is in our shelter. Only YOU can identify your pet. With your lost report, photos of your pet are most helpful to us along with a detailed description of your animal.

Colorado state law requires an animal be held for 72 hours after arrival. The Longmont Humane Society holds an animal for a period of 5 days after which time the animal becomes legally ours if not reclaimed. This is why it is also important to check our adoption floor, as your pet may already be available for adoption.

In the event your pet is here at our shelter, you will be required to pay impound fees to reclaim. Fees can vary greatly depending upon how long your animal has been here and if you are required to buy a license, etc. State law requires that all dogs and cats over 4 months are currently vaccinated against rabies, and owners must show documented proof to reclaim your pet. If you do not have proof of rabies, you must purchase a rabies voucher to be redeemed at our clinic.

Fees:

  • Impound Fee:         $55 (or $45, if pet is wearing current Longmont City license)
  • Care and Feeding:                $20 per night
  • Pre-paid Rabies Voucher:   $20
  • Longmont City license*:     $15 for altered pets, $25 for un-altered pets

* City license fees apply only to pet owners residing within Longmont city limits

Found a Pet

If you have found a pet, you may still call us with information about the animal and to check if we have any matching lost reports. If the animal is wearing a city license, we can trace the owner's contact information. If you are unable to keep the animal in your care, we can instruct you how to proceed. Depending on where you reside, you may to bring the animal to us, or call an animal control officer in your area. We are also able to scan a found pet for a microchip, as many dogs and cats are not wearing collars and tags for identification.
