LHS Dog Training Classes

Paws to Listen

Child Reading to DogLongmont Humane Society’s newest community outreach program is designed to get children hooked on reading by using trained dogs as reading companions. There is powerful evidence that dogs can encourage children to be lifelong learners just by lying down near the child and listening.

The canine pack is comprised of 16 dogs and 15 handlers. Each dog is a registered Therapy Dogs Incorporated member.

Potential reading dens is primarily schools, libraries, bookstores and wherever four paws are welcome. The goal is to improve children’s self-confidence, self-esteem while improving reading skills and maintaining a sense of pride in their accomplishments.
